Let us start by focusing on some popular men hat styles. Such as; Fedora hats for men, Panama hats and Cowboy  hats are all favorite hats for men.

Fedora Hats For Men Began As A Women’s Hat

The Fedora started out to be a women’s hat. Sex symbol actress Sarah Bernhardt showcased the hat as a costume piece in the 1882 play Fe’dora. Sarah played the role as a heroine, a Russian princess named Fe’dora Romanoff. In the play, (Sarah Bernhardt), a notorious cross-dresser, wore a center creased, soft brimmed hat.

Did this hat style remain a women’s hat? This hat style changed hands sort of speak and took on a masculine role, no longer exclusive for women.

After an advertising push, it finally ended up as a hat for men in cold weather climates who needed a hat to keep the snow and rain off them. So this hat style changed into a Fedora hat for men. How did men transform into wearing this hat style change?

In the 1930s-40s-50s, the Fedora was highly regarded by Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra and gangsters, who appreciated that the hat could withstand the elements while obscuring their faces, In other words, the hat went from being a symbol of coopted masculinity, to one simply considered masculine. While loosing its popularity by the 1960s, it remained a staple of period films like Indiana Jones and a testosterone-boosting accessory for celebrities like Johnny Depp and Michael Jackson.

Panama Hats Migrates Throughout The World

Where do you think the Panama hats originated? If you said Panama, sorry, they originated in Ecuador in the early 1600s. Did the Panama Hats die out over the next 200 years? No, quite the opposite, this style prospered and became so popular that by the 1800s Ecuador started exporting to Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

Since this hat is being sold to different parts of the world how is this hat being advertised? You’re going to like this, word of mouth! In 1834, gold-rush miners that were making the trip to California via Panama bought this style of hat in Panama. Thus, these migrating people started calling this hat the Panama Hat.

Okay, so what happened to this hat in the 1900s? Would you believe the hat became popular in the United States because President Theodore Roosevelt was photographed wearing a Panama hat while visiting the building site of the Panama Canal. By 1944, Panama hats were Ecuador’s top export.

Moving forward into our day, did the Panama hat retain it’s popularity? Yes, it sure did! Popularity in the hat continued as movie stars, politicians, and noteworthy fashion figures wore Panama hats in warm weather settings. Hercule Poirot, Robert Redford in the Great Gatsby and Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird wore this stylish hat.

Cowboy Hats An American Design Known Worldwide

The concept of a broad brimmed hat with a high crown was worn by Mongolian horseman in the 1200s. The cowboy hat is a high crowned, wide brimmed hat best known as the defining piece of attire for the North American cowboy. Is this hat a pure American design? Well, if you’re thinking no, you are correct. This style of hat was influenced by the Mexican culture in the 1800s. The first western cowboy hat was the open crowned Boss of the Plains.

In 1865 John Batterson Stetson marketed the Boss of the Plains to cowboys. While only making one style of the hat, they came in different qualities ranging from one grade material at five dollars apiece to pure beaver felt hats for thirty dollars each. That was a lot of money in the 1,800s.

From 1865 into the first half of the 1900s this cowboy hat was an indispensable item in every man’s wardrobe. Stetson focused on expensive, high quality hats that represented a real investment for the working cowboy and a statement of success for the city dweller. This style cowboy hat remains the universal image of the American West.

Did the cowboy hat design change over the years? Yes, sort of. The front creased Carlsbad, destined to become the cowboy style. The high crowned, wide brimmed, soft felt western hat that followed took on a slightly modified design.

Creases in cowboy hats are used to give hats individual character and help users to identify with a particular subculture. Creased and dents make it easier to remove the hat by grasping it from the crown rather than the brim. The shape of the hats crown and brim were often modified by the wearer for fashion and to protect against weather. Because of the ease of personalization, it was often possible to tell where the cowboy was from, right down to which ranch, they worked for, simply by looking at the crease in the crown. Cowboy hats are now worn by farmers, ranchers and city dwellers all over the world.

Movie Star John Wayne christened the cowboy hat as;  The Hat that won the West. President Ronald Reagan demonstrated the popularity of the cowboy hat as a movie star and a horseback rider.

The first American law enforcement agency to adopt Stetson’s western / cowboy hat as part of their uniform was the Texas Rangers. A Stetson based design is also part of the ceremonial uniform of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, President Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon B Johnson wore cowboy hats manufactured by Stetson.

It is an item of apparel that can be worn in any corner of the world, and receive immediate recognition as part of North American Cowboy Culture. Today’s cowboy hat has remained basically unchanged in construction and design since the first one created in 1865 by JB Stetson.


Fedora Hats started off as a women’s hat. After an advertising push, it finally ended up as a hat for men in cold weather climates who needed a hat to keep the snow and rain off them. From that point forward this awesome designed hat from Ecuador got named the Panama Hat.

Cowboy Hats what can I say quoting John Wayne ” The Hat that won the West”. It’s a hat style that stayed true to its original maker John Batterson Stetson. This hat was favored by presidents, movie stars and law enforcement agencies. Today’s cowboy hat is still popular among people worldwide.

See, the problem is that those hats, especially the stetson marshall look cool. But some people can pull off a “cool hat look” and some people cannot. Judging from the tone of my comment, I think you know what category I fall into…
